On core technology of small pixel pitch


As household display, TV has been through CRT, plasma, LCD to nowadays mainstream LED. Even though the screen size is getting bigger and bigger, the biggest LCD screen in the world 110 inches, such disadvantages as limited panel brightness and narrow color gamut (only 72% of NTSC) still remain the bottleneck of LED development.


Being the main force of display equipment in conference room, command center and studio, business DLP rear-projection faces the problem of lacking brightness, color saturation and contract ratio and being restrained by the displaying size. By contrast, the leathal shortcoming of titled LCD screen is the unremovable black lines caused by the bezel between panels even though it鈥檚 not troubled by the size problem. Obvious seams can be seen in Fig. 1 and by no means can seamless connection be achieved.

Confronted with so many disvantages, displaying technology badly calls for a serious revolution. At this very moment, the small pixel pitch LED came into being and take the charge. LED display has been around for 20 years, evolving from monochrome to dual color to full color display. Compared with other displays, low resolution has always been the obstacle impeding the development of indoor LED. With the rapid development of LED technology in recent years, small pixel pitch LED display made its debut after the two main problems of LED lamp and manufacturing technology had been sovled, entering the indoor display market in the situation where to solve the disadvantages of traditional displaying equipment. Fig 2 shows the high performance of small pixel pitch.


Having noticed this blue ocean, many manufacturers enter the small pixel pitch market one after another and wage wars with each other. Who to win this war depends on who masters the core technology and brings high quality products to cater for the customers. Whatsoever, small pixel pitch product is just like a newly born baby needing to grow, and there are four main problems remaining to be solved.

Gray scale will be lost when brightness declines

The brightness of traditional LCD display ranges from 300 to 500 nit. Given that the light source of LED display is the LED self-luminous component which is very sensitive to human eyes, the brightness of small pixel pitch display has to be between 100 and 300 nit so that it鈥檚 lower than that of LCD display and viewers鈥檈yes would not get tired after a long time watching in short distance. Under such low brightness, the gray scale of common displays would decrease from 16 bit to 8 bit or even lower. Performance comparisons are shown in the below table.

2.     Super large load capacity for screen size

With pixel pitch getting smaller and cabinet resolution higher, the load capacity of ordaniary receiving card can no longer meet the requirement.


3.     Uniformity

Short indoor viewing distance puts higher demand on the uniformity of color and brightness of small pixel pitch products.


4.     After sales maintenance

Maintenance difficuty accordingly increases as pixel pitch gets smaller and resolution higher, which calls for the improving of product reliablity.
